Anyone who wants to understand how AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews assemble their answers first has to understand what these systems do not do: they don't simply run a Google search and copy the first hit. Instead, they evaluate text fragments by how well they can answer a specific question — directly, without detours.
The selection principle works like this: an AI model looks for passages that state a claim clearly, back an assertion with a number or a fact, or explain a matter so that no further context is needed. Texts that beat around the bush fall through this filter. Texts that answer precisely are preferred.
That has direct consequences for anyone who publishes content. It is not enough for a text to be topically relevant. It has to be built so that a language model can take a paragraph from it and use it as a self-contained answer — without knowing the rest of the article. That is a fundamentally different writing goal from classic SEO.
On top of that comes an authority signal: models prefer sources that combine precise statements with verifiable details. A sentence like "According to a study, AI is important" is worthless. A sentence like "Companies that use GEO optimization report on average 30% higher visibility in AI-generated answers" is citation-worthy — because it contains a concrete, reusable statement.
The Four Text Features That Create Citability
Not every well-written text gets cited. And not every cited text is particularly elegantly phrased. What counts are four specific features that together create citability.
1. Atomic statements
A citation-worthy statement stands on its own. It needs no preceding paragraph as an introduction and no following sentence to explain it. Write every important sentence as if it were cut out of the article and pasted into someone else's answer — does it still make sense then? If not, it is not citation-worthy.
2. Fact density
AI models prefer content with high information density per sentence. Numbers, names, years, definitions, and clearly delineated concepts increase the likelihood of being cited. Vague phrasings like "many experts believe" or "it could be that" lower it.
3. Question-answer structure
Texts that answer a question, implicitly or explicitly, are used more often as an answer fragment. That means: start sections with the core statement, not with the introduction. Journalists call this the inverted pyramid style — the most important information first. The same principle applies to GEO.
4. Linguistic clarity
Ambiguous phrasings are hard for language models to process. If a sentence has two possible interpretations, it gets cited less often than a sentence that makes exactly one statement. Write actively, concretely, and without unnecessary hedging.

At first glance, SEO and GEO pursue similar goals — creating visibility — but they work by completely different mechanisms. Anyone who doesn't understand this optimizes in the wrong direction.
SEO texts are built for search algorithms and for people scanning a search-results page. The most important levers: keywords in headings, internal linking, load time, backlinks, text length as a relevance signal. An SEO text may contain filler, as long as the keyword density is right and the user stays on the page.

GEO texts (Generative Engine Optimization) are built for language models that don't read a page title, don't perceive load time, and don't care about backlinks. What counts: the information content of individual paragraphs, the precision of statements, and the self-sufficiency of text fragments.
A typical SEO opening sentence reads: "In this article we explain everything you need to know about topic X." From a GEO perspective, this sentence is worthless — it contains no statement that an AI model could use as an answer.
A GEO-optimized replacement: "X refers to the process by which Y happens — with direct effects on Z." This sentence is immediately citation-worthy, because it delivers a definition.
Another essential difference: SEO rewards length as an indirect relevance signal. GEO penalizes length when it comes at the expense of precision. A 300-word paragraph with one clear statement beats a 1,000-word paragraph that wraps the same statement in cotton wool.
That doesn't mean SEO and GEO are incompatible. But anyone who writes only for search engines produces texts that AI models systematically ignore — and this channel is growing, not shrinking.

This checklist can be applied to any existing or new blog post. No point requires a complete rewrite — often targeted edits at the paragraph level are enough.
